Singapore – A Concise Feature – Part I

A five and a half hour flight from New Delhi, India takes one to Singapore – a land where the best of the East meets the best of the West.. Singapore is an island city-state with a diverse cultural and linguistic heritage and a thriving modern economy. It is a centre of global commerce and trade, with one of the world’s most business-friendly economies. With limited natural resources, the success of Singapore is based on its population’s entrepreneurial capabilities and drive to succeed.

What makes Singapore special?

In a survey reported in The Economist in March 2002, Singapore’s quality of life surpassed that of London or New York. The standard of living in Singapore is among the highest in Asia, with state-of-the-art facilities for education, shopping, sports, and recreation. In 2006, Singapore was ranked Number 17 as one of the most livable cities in the world, and was one of the 3 Asian cities to make it to the list.  (Source – Monocle, a European based lifestyle magazine). It’s a very safe country with extremely low crime rates. Singapore is known throughout the world as an “epicurean” destination where the shopping, travelling and culinary opportunities galore. Singapore is the fourth wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP (PPP) per capita, and the twentieth wealthiest in terms of GDP (nominal) per capita. Despite Singapore’s small size, it has the world’s ninth largest foreign reserves.

Specific reasons for studying in Singapore

Singapore is an education-driven country. Education has played a key role in the development and advancement of this country. The combination of Asian schooling and Western-style practices has made Singapore an educational hub in Asia. By being in Singapore, a student gets a chance to be plugged into an education system that promotes excellence and be part of a progressive, cosmopolitan community. There are more than 50,000 international students in Singapore, of which about over 2,000 are Indian students. Indian students enjoy studying in Singapore because they have access to the wonderful ethnic districts such as Little India, Chinatown, and Malay Village which exude flavors of the culture, diversity, and history of Singapore. A number of international institutions, such as INSEAD, MIT, University of Chicago amongst other top-ranked global universities, have created satellite campuses there to serve as a launch pad for their entrance into Asia.

Popular / Preferable courses in Singapore

Singapore offers various courses. One can find many options for Computing, MBA and Finance. Singapore is also known for its hospitality and culinary courses. Most of the undergraduate students prefer getting into engineering or business management courses. There are even options of pursuing dual majors as engineering with economics or biosciences with psychology. Hence, students get variety of options for courses while continuing their degree programs. For Postgraduate courses and doctorate studies students have wide choices for study. All branches of Engineering, Biosciences, Management and Computers are the most popular fields to get into. Many institutes offer internship programs in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. For the students looking for “earn and learn options”, internship programs are very attractive.
