Scholarships for Indian Students Aspiring to Study Abroad

A scholarship is a reward of financial assistance for students to further their academic endeavors. Scholarships are awarded as per various requisites, which generally reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. In this article we would list some of the scholarships awarded to the Indian students by the Indian government and non-governmental organizations and some of the scholarships awarded by the international educational institutions only to the Indian students.


Scholarships for Indian students granted by Indian organizations


National Overseas Scholarships\Passage Grants comprise of 30 overseas scholarships and five passage grants awarded by the central government. 27 scholarships and four passage grants are awarded to Scheduled Castes, two scholarships and one passage grant is awarded to Nomadic and semi-Nomadic Tribes and one scholarship is awarded to Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisans.


Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships are PhD level scholarships offered to researchers with excellent academic record and leadership qualifications.

R.D. Sethna Scholarships are awarded to students irrespective of any caste, religion or creed. Loan scholarships start from Rs.10, 000 and more.

Sahu Jain Trust Scholarships are loan scholarships given to students pursuing technical education; the maximum amount loaned per student being Rs. 1, 00,000.

The J.N Ratan Tata Endowment Fund
was established in 1892 and it is extending its support to deserving Indian students to study abroad, by providing a monthly stipend of 1000 US dollars, besides covering the full academic fees. The organization is particular about encouraging students only with consistent academic records. The student must be less than 27 years of age at the time of enrolling for the scholarship. Also, available is an interest free loan given to students pursuing undergraduate, graduate and research programs, the JN Tata Endowment loan ranges between Rs. 60,000 to 4, 00,000.

Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarships are awarded to women with exceptional academic record or work experience.

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships are awarded to graduate and research students with good academic record.

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant
and 50% loan basis through application once a year around June or July.

BD Bangur Endowment Scholarships are loan scholarships offered to students pursuing graduate and research programs in the fields of medicine, engineering, technology, humanities, science and business administration.

K. C. Mahindra Scholarships are loan scholarships provided to students pursuing graduate degree. The loan amount ranges from Rs. 2, 00,000 to Rs. 8, 00,000.

Bharath Petroleum Corporation Ltd. grants an international scholarship to the Indian students who have secured at least 65% in arts and 70 % in engineering, science or commerce departments in their undergraduate degree from a recognized university. It is applicable for Indian students who are under 25 years of age as on first of September of the year they apply.
